Originally passed in 1961 and amended in 1973, the Illinois Consumer Fraud and Deceptive Business Practices Act gives consumers the right to take legal action if they have suffered from unfair marketplace practices, such as the omission or misrepresentation of facts. Specifically, the ICFA prohibits any unfair practices that are done "in the conduct of any trade or commerce."

For example, a consumer who purchases a defective vehicle from an auto dealer, who does not disclose the defect, may have grounds to file a lawsuit under the ICFA.
